So, a little bit about us… So far six generations of Cunliffes have been associated with the two estates.
As you’ll see in the pic from 2019, we are very much a family-run hotel, albeit with the incredible Team Gilpin who run the hotel with us. John and Christine (on the left) started Gilpin in 1988, and were joined by eldest son Barney and his wife Zoë (on the right, with their daughter Xiá) in 2001. Younger son Ben (centre with his wife Rachel) has his own architectural practice, Ben Cunliffe Architects, and has overseen all architectural projects at Gilpin since 2005. We were all devastated when John and Chris passed away in 2020 and 2022 respectively, and still miss them every day.
As with many things at Gilpin, our favourite strapline (#loveandlaughter) came from various conversations with different guests who said to Zoë that when they think of Gilpin, they think of love and laughter – ours, and theirs -which is a really lovely compliment.
